CNaVT

CNaVT stands for 'Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal', which means 'Certificate in Dutch as a Foreign Language'. These certificates are awarded jointly by the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands and the University of Leuven in Belgium.

The CNaVT is sponsored by the Dutch and Belgium governments and is aimed at students who would like a qualification in the Dutch language, but live elsewhere than in the Netherlands or Belgium (although many foreign students living in the Netherlands and Belgium also take these exams).

CNaVT Levels:
You can be entered for the CNaVT examinations at one of six levels:

1. PTIT Level
For those who wish to maintain social contact with Dutch speaking family, or those who want to manage as a tourist in Dutch speaking areas, or those who want to communicate with Dutch speaking tourists in a non-professional context in their own country.
You are roughly at the PTIT level if you can:
• Write notes and messages in Dutch relating to matters in areas of immediate need.
• Read basic Dutch texts and find specific information in everyday material.
• Catch the main points in clearly spoken Dutch and in messages and announcements.
• Speak direct information on familiar topics and handle short social exchanges.

2. PTPB Level
For those who need Dutch skills in their work as labourers or skilled workers in Dutch speaking areas.
You are roughly at the PTPB level if you can:
• Write texts on familiar subjects and personal letters describing experiences and impressions.
• Read Dutch texts that consist mainly of everyday or job related language.
• Understand the main points of clearly spoken Dutch on familiar matters.
• Enter into Dutch conversations on topics that are familiar or pertinent to everyday life.

3. PMT Level
For those who have an interest in the Dutch language and culture and want to live in the Netherlands or Belgium for an extended period of time.
You are roughly at the PMT level if you can:
• Write texts on familiar subjects and personal letters describing experiences and impressions.
• Read Dutch texts that consist mainly of everyday or job related language.
• Understand the main points of clearly spoken Dutch on familiar matters.
• Enter into Dutch conversations on topics that are familiar or pertinent to everyday life.

4. PPT Level
For those who would like to work in an administrative or service-oriented profession and therefore need Dutch.
You are roughly at the PPT level if you can:
• Write clear detailed texts in Dutch on a wide range of subjects related to your interests.
• Read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems and understand contemporary prose.
• Understand most TV news and current affairs programs and the majority of films in standard dialect.
• Take an active part in Dutch discussion in familiar contexts and account for and sustain your views.

5. PTHO Level
For those who would like to study at a Dutch speaking college of higher education or university.
You are roughly at the PTHO level if you can:
• Write clear well structured text explaining points of view at some length about complex subjects.
• Read and understand long and complex factual and literary texts, appreciating distinctions of style.
• Understand TV programs without much effort & extended speech even when not clearly structured.
• Express yourself fluently and spontaneously in Dutch without much obvious searching for expressions.

6. PAT Level
For those who want to work in a Dutch speaking academic environment or who want to teach Dutch as a foreign language.
You are roughly at the PAT level if you can:
• Write clear well structured text explaining points of view at some length about complex subjects.
• Read and understand long and complex factual and literary texts, appreciating distinctions of style.
• Understand TV programs without much effort & extended speech even when not clearly structured.
• Express yourself fluently and spontaneously in Dutch without much obvious searching for expressions.

CNaVT Examinations:
The CNaVT examinations are held once per year in the first half of May, and you can sit them at the Dutch Language School in Oxford:
• We charge £114.92 to enrol you with CNaVT and to sit your CNaVT PTIT Dutch examinations with us.
• We charge £105.75 to enrol you with CNaVT and to sit your CNaVT PTPB Dutch examinations with us.
• We charge £121.17 to enrol you with CNaVT and to sit your CNaVT PMT Dutch examinations with us.
• We charge £125.96 to enrol you with CNaVT and to sit your CNaVT PPT Dutch examinations with us.
• We charge £130.33 to enrol you with CNaVT and to sit your CNaVT PTHO Dutch examinations with us.
• We charge £128.88 to enrol you with CNaVT and to sit your CNaVT PAT Dutch examinations with us.

We will select the exact dates for these exams nearer the time.

Each level has three examination papers that we will schedule on the same day, usually starting at 10am. The three papers will take between 3 and 6 hours to complete depending on the level, the number of candidates, and the length of scheduled breaks.
